We hope you’re ready for a day full of adventure, natural wonder, and just plain fun. Your guide will pick you up at your hotel and take a scenic route through abundant nature. Just 45 minutes outside central Cartagena is a tiny town with the tiny Volcan de Lodo (mud volcano), El Totumo. This is your first stop on this journey today. Spend an hour here getting literally down and dirty or, rather UP and dirty: you’ll be leaving behind your clothes, wearing only swimwear, climbing a somewhat slippery staircase to immerse yourself in the volcano’s caldera. Floating and sliding in a pool of mud purportedly has beneficial properties. Colombians will buy jars of this mud to take back home when they visit. You will definitely be clean, with smooth, glowing skin, and relaxed after a vigorous scrub-down. Being surrounded by slate-colored, mud-coated people of all shapes and sizes is a great equalizer!
A quick jaunt away is an even more relaxing picnic on a secluded beach. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a charming local restaurant. You’ll also have time for a swim, but don’t get too settled, because we’re off to the next adventure.
The mangrove forest here is a beautiful feature. You’ll marvel at the incredible flora and fauna so abundant here, yet close to Cartagena. Step into a canoe with a guide native to the area. He or she will point out the rich, hidden wildlife and will introduce you to the people who call the mangroves their home and live off the treasures of this fragile eco-system. You might even have the opportunity to interact with some of them along the way. This excursion will give you a new perspective on our interconnectedness with nature. Simply having an appreciation of this benefits the local community here.
